Our Curriculum

Overview

 

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is structured around seven areas of learning and development. These areas guide how children learn, grow, and develop from birth to five.

They are grouped into three Prime Areas and four Specific Areas.
The Prime Areas lay the foundations for all future learning. The Specific Areas build on these foundations and help create a broad, balanced curriculum.

Prime Areas of Learning

 

1. Communication and Language (C&L)

This area focuses on helping children develop spoken language, listening skills, and the confidence to express themselves.

Children are supported to understand others, communicate their thoughts and needs, and build strong foundations for learning and social interaction.

Key aspects include:

  • Listening, attention, and understanding

  • Speaking

 

2. Physical Development (PD)

Physical Development supports children to move with confidence, develop coordination and control, and begin to understand the importance of healthy choices.

It helps children build strength, balance, and independence through both large and small movements.

Key aspects include:

  • Gross motor skills

  • Fine motor skills

 

3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)

This area focuses on supporting children to develop confidence, resilience, and a positive sense of self.

Children learn how to manage emotions, build relationships, and feel secure as part of a community.

Key aspects include:

  • Self-regulation

  • Managing self

  • Building relationships

4. Literacy

Literacy introduces children to early reading and writing in ways that are meaningful, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate.

Children develop an understanding of language, stories, and mark-making at their own pace.

Key aspects include:

  • Comprehension

  • Word reading

  • Writing

 

5. Mathematics

Mathematics supports children to develop confidence with numbers and an understanding of patterns, shapes, and measures.

Children learn through play, exploration, and everyday experiences.

Key aspects include:

  • Number

  • Numerical patterns

 

6. Understanding the World

This area helps children make sense of their environment, their community, and the wider world around them.

Children explore differences, similarities, and change through real-life experiences.

Key aspects include:

  • Past and present

  • People, culture and communities

  • The natural world

 

7. Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive Arts and Design encourages creativity, imagination, and self-expression through a wide range of materials and experiences.

Children are supported to explore ideas, feelings, and creativity freely and confidently.

Key aspects include:

  • Creating with materials

  • Being imaginative and expressive
